Alfstad& Contemporary and Sarasota Sculpture Center Present,
Rubber, Metal & Stone: Small Works Sculptures & Drawings

By Chakaia Booker, Hans Van de Bovenkamp and Boaz Vaadia

SARASOTA, FL, January 19, 2014 – Alfstad& Contemporary, in partnership with Sarasota Sculpture Center, presents its inaugural show, Rubber, Metal & Stone: Small Works Sculptures & Drawings, which displays the work of three internationally known artists, Chakaia Booker, Hans Van de Bovenkamp and Boaz Vaadia. Featuring small-space sculptures, prints and drawings, this is the first exhibition of 2015, for both the new Alfstad& Contemporary and the newly renamed Sarasota Sculpture Center (formerly Season of Sculpture).

“We are thrilled to collaborate with Susan McLeod and the Sarasota Sculpture Center to bring these stunning creations to our new working-art space and gallery in the heart of the booming Rosemary District,” says Sam Alfstad. “Last season at the IceHouse, we showed mainly large-scale pieces, because it was a big space. Our new space is perfect for slightly smaller works and more focused shows of contemporary art.”

“The work of Chakaia Booker, Hans Van de Bovenkamp and Boaz Vaadia are all familiar to Sarasota art lovers from seeing their monumental pieces at Season of Sculpture displays on the bayfront,” says Susan McLeod. “But this is a chance for our audience to see their sculpture in a whole new way, on a different scale, smaller, more intimate – and their prints and drawings are beautiful.”

More On the Artists:

Chakaia Booker creates unique, amazing sculpture from discarded tires. Fusing ecological concerns with explorations of racial, economic and gender differences, she recycles tires into complex assemblages. In fact, Ms. Booker sees herself as a sculpture formed through daily tasks of dressing, sewing and cooking, which she considers to be art forms in their own right.

Renowned for his monumental sculpture created primarily for open-air public locales, Hans Van de Bovenkamp has been described as an artist-mystic whose work heightens the viewer's sense of fantasy, imagination and discovery.  He is best known for his large-scale abstract work in bronze, stainless steel, painted steel, and aluminum.

The work of Boaz Vaadia is among the most recognizable sculpture in galleries, museums, public art spaces and private collections around the world. His evocative stacked-stone figures (solo, in family groups, sometimes with companion animals) set a tone of peace and serenity. Working with layers – primarily in stone – he creates distinctive 3-D, hand chiseled sculptures.

The public is invited to the Opening on Friday, January 23rd, from 5:30- 8:30pm, Wine & Hors d’oeuvres, at Alfstad& Contemporary, 1419 5th Street in the Rosemary District, Sarasota (next to Lolita Tartine). Rubber, Metal & Stone: Small Works Sculptures & Drawings runs from Jan 24th to Feb 20th, Tuesday - Saturday, 11-5 PM.
