Hans Van de Bovenkamp
Renowned for his monumental sculpture installations, Hans Van de Bovenkamp has been described as an artist-mystic whose work – with its signature power, lyricism and grand proportions – heightens the viewer's sense of imagination and discovery.
Born in Holland, but a youthful immigrant to the United States, he was part of the avant-garde Tenth Street scene in New York City in the '60s, and an early adherent of Abstract Expressionism. Working from residences in New York City, upstate New York and Sagaponack in the Hamptons, Van de Bovenkamp has earned an international reputation over the past 50 years by designing, fabricating and installing hundreds of commissioned sculptures. As the result of successful collaborations with architects, municipal officials and museum directors, his work can be now viewed in public, corporate and private collections around the world.
“I find myself working towards an art which includes a spiritual dimension. I have become increasingly aware of art as a dialogue between matter and spirit," says Van de Bovenkamp. "In recent works, I have emphasized myth, symbol and dream to evoke an atmosphere in which the sculpture and its environment speak to the subconscious to make the observer aware of the dreamlike nature of life, of which we all are part.”
